About USI Journal
The quarterly USI Journal is the oldest surviving defence journal in Asia, having first appeared in 1872. In an era when there is a feeling that free expression of views by Defence personnel is not looked upon kindly by the establishment, the Journal in fact provides just such a forum, without regard to seniority and length of service in the Armed Forces, subject of course, to propriety and quality of the written work. 12,500 copies are printed and readership is up to 30,000. The contents include articles on national / global security in general and the Armed Forces in particular. It also covers reviews of latest books published within India and abroad, and presented to the USI.

The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for 'furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.'
