Pallikkutam is the name of one of the Foundational Educational Legacies of India, that originated with the Buddhist Revolution in education, which liberated education in this part of the world from its caste-based exclusivism. Buddhist education was a totally inclusive, essentially secular, profoundly scientific, substantially liberal and truly international system. The word Pallikkutam is derived from the Pali language, the language of Sree Buddha, from the roots: Palli, meaning “Buddhist Monasteries” and kootam, meaning “something attached to those monasteries”, namely “schools”. All the important international universities of ancient India, including Nalanda, Takshashila, Vickramsila, Jagaddala, Vallabhi and Puspagiri, belonged to the stream of Pallikkutams in this sense. Following this educational tradition, in South Indian languages, such as Tamil and Malayalam, “Pallikkutam” just means “School”. We are inspired by the example of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, who made critical interventions in the education sector of the South Indian state of Kerala by promoting a movement to preserve the Pallikkutam educational legacy of the nation, by insisting that catholic parishes build such Pallikkutams attached to the churches, as a precondition for their official approval from the bishop.
